Drain Repair with Robotic Cutting

High-pressure water jetting can handle most drain blockages,  but some obstructions are simply too tough, too large, or too deeply embedded for conventional methods to remove.

SEQ Pipe Works uses state-of-the-art robotic cutting technology to precisely target and remove stubborn obstructions from inside your pipes, without damaging the pipe itself, and without digging up your property.

Common causes include:

Why Does My Kitchen Sink Keep Blocking?

A kitchen sink that drains slowly, gurgles, or backs up is one of the most common plumbing complaints we see, and one of the most frequently misdiagnosed. Grease, food scraps, and detergent build-up are the obvious suspects, but recurring blockages are often a sign of a deeper issue in the pipe itself.

At SEQ Pipe Works, we use  CCTV pipe inspections to determine exactly what’s causing the blockage before recommending a fix, so you get a solution that actually lasts rather than a temporary clear.

What Is Robotic Pipe Cutting?

Robotic pipe cutting combines a compact, remotely operated cutting unit with high-definition camera technology to navigate through your pipes, locate and remove obstructions with surgical precision. The operator guides the machine in real time using live camera footage, allowing for accurate, controlled cutting, even around bends and junctions.

The cutting head can be fitted with different tools depending on what needs to be removed, from diamond-tipped grinding heads for concrete and hardened deposits, to specialised blades for cutting through dense tree roots and foreign objects. The result is a thoroughly cleared pipe, restored to its full internal diameter, with no excavation required.

What Can Robotic Cutting Remove?

Robotic cutters can tackle a wide range of pipe  obstructions that other methods simply can’t handle, including:

  • Large or dense tree roots that have infiltrated a sewer or stormwater pipe  and cannot be cleared with jetting alone
  • Concrete and grout deposits, common after nearby construction activity
  • Foreign objects such as metal star pickets, timber stakes, and rocks lodged in the pipe
  • Broken pipe sections including earthenware shards or collapsed sections that are obstructing flow
  • Protruding joint lips or catch points that cause ongoing blockage
  • Reinstating junction connections after pipe relining — cutting open branch lines that have been covered by the liner

If the blockage is there, robotic cutting can get to it.

What Pipes Are Suitable for Robotic Cutting?

Robotic cutters are highly versatile and compatible with a wide range of pipe materials and sizes, including:

  • Clay (earthenware)
  • PVC
  • Concrete
  • Cast iron
  • Copper
  • Steel

They can be used in pipe diameters typically ranging from 80mm and above, covering most residential and commercial drainage applications. Whether it’s a narrow domestic drain or a larger commercial sewer line, our robotic cutting equipment can be configured to get the job done.

How Robotic Cutting Works: Step by Step

CCTV Drain Inspection

Before any cutting begins, we conduct a detailed CCTV drain camera inspection to locate the obstruction, assess it, and determine the most effective solution.

Pipe Preparation

Where possible, we carry out a hydro jet clean first to clear loose debris and give the robotic cutter a clear path to the obstruction.

Robotic Cutter Deployment

The robotic cutter is inserted into the pipe and guided to the obstruction using real-time HD camera footage. The operator selects the appropriate cutting head for the job.

Precision Cutting

The cutting head removes the obstruction with controlled, targeted force,  preserving the pipe wall while fully clearing the blockage.

Post-Cut Inspection & Next Steps

Once the obstruction is cleared, we carry out a follow-up camera inspection to confirm the pipe is fully open. If pipe damage is identified, we’ll advise on whether pipe relining is the right next step to provide a permanent repair.

Incorrect pipe gradient or sizing

Some older kitchen plumbing installations have inadequate fall or undersized pipework, meaning waste doesn’t clear properly even under otherwise normal conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Water jetting uses high-pressure water to blast through soft blockages like grease, sludge, and smaller roots. Robotic cutting is used when an obstruction is too hard, too large, or too deeply embedded for water jetting to remove.

No,  that’s one of its key advantages. The cutting head is precisely controlled using real-time camera footage, allowing the operator to target only the obstruction while leaving the pipe wall intact.

Yes. A CCTV drain camera inspection is essential to locate the obstruction, assess its size and nature, and confirm that robotic cutting is the right approach. It also ensures the cutting head is positioned correctly before any work begins.

It depends on the complexity and location of the obstruction. Most residential jobs are completed within a few hours. More complex commercial jobs or multi-junction situations may take longer. We’ll give you a clear timeframe after the initial CCTV inspection.

Yes, clay pipes are one of the most common pipe types we work with on the Gold Coast, particularly in homes built before the 1990s. Robotic cutting works well in clay pipes and is often used to clear root intrusion and restore pipe diameter before pipe relining is carried out.

Not always. If the pipe is structurally sound once the obstruction is cleared, relining may not be required. However, if the obstruction caused pipe damage such as cracks from root intrusion or broken sections,  we’ll recommend pipe relining as a permanent fix to prevent future problems.
